Equipped with one of the most up-to-date labs in Bosnia and Herzegovina and under the guidance of academic staff educated at renowned national and international universities, Program of Biological Sciences and Bioengineering has become one of the most popular programs at International University of Sarajevo (IUS). Coordinator of this program is Assist. Prof. Dr. Mohamed Ragab Abdelgawad from Egypt who earned two master degrees; one from Minia University in Egypt and another one from Bourgogne University in France; as well as PhD degree from Montpellier University also in France.
Program of Biological Sciences and Bioengineering owns latest and up-to-date apparatus in its laboratories, such as PCR (Polymerase Chain Reaction) machine, spectrophotometer, autoclave, Ph-meter, incubator and laminar chamber for in-vitro techniques, etc. Academic staff of this programs include: Prof. Dr. Abdul Razaque Memon (PhD from Ege University, Turkey and D. Sc. Nagoya University, Japan) previous program coordinator and pioneer in establishing the Molecular biology and Genetics labaratory in this program; Assist. prof. Dr. Ramazan Kizil; senior assistant Msc Daria Ler (BSc and Msc from Karl-Franz University in Austria); senior assistant Msc Merisa Ćenanović (Bsc and Msc from University of Sarajevo); assistant Bacc. ing. genetics Emina Šunje (Bsc from University of Sarajevo), assistant Bacc. Jasmin Sutković (Bsc from International University of Sarajevo), etc.
Studying at the Program of Biological Sciences and Bioengineering
During the first year at the International University of Sarajevo, students take joint University courses, regardless of the program they choose. Besides the compulsory Common University Courses, students can also, with the counseling from their Academic advisors, choose several Elective University Courses. All lectures are held in English language, in order to make student competitive on international labor market, as well as able to continue their education at international universities.
On the second year, students study courses related to biochemistry, molecular biology and genetics. Students do some basic chemistry and biology experiments, for example, to symthesize some chemical compounds and prepare micro slides related to cell division in plant cells.
On the third and fourth year, students conduct some basic experiments in molecular biology by using PCR with an aim to amplify genes and perform cloning experiments. Also, techniques of in-vitro plants cultures and techniques connected to bioinformatics modeling such as prediction of 3D protein structure, protein structure research and establishment of protein-protein connections. Last spring semester Techniques in Molecular Biology laboratory course was offered by Prof. Dr. Memon where most of the basic techniques of molecural biology (DNA isolation, cloning and electrophoresis) was practically carries out by students.
In the future, staff of the Program of Biological Sciences and Bioengineering plans to direct itself to strengthening of research activities and purchase of new equipment. Currently new labaratories (Chemistry, Biochemistry, Biology and Biotechnology) are being built in an IUS Research Center which will be ready in Fall semester 2011. In the near future plan is to open another laboratory that would be specialized for plant physiology and anatomy, and offer students new courses such as analytic chemistry. Procuring of new equipment, for example real time PCR, electron microscope, fluoroscent microscope and GC-MR are being planned.
