The International University of Sarajevo (IUS) has earned another international distinction, ranking first in Bosnia and Herzegovina in the UI GreenMetric Sustainable University Rankings 2026, a global ranking system that evaluates universities based on their commitment to sustainability and environmental responsibility.

According to the official 2026 results, IUS secured the top position among participating universities from Bosnia and Herzegovina and ranked 1,878th worldwide among 2,016 higher education institutions from 110 countries. This recognition highlights the University's efforts to integrate sustainability principles into its institutional development, academic activities, and campus management.

The UI GreenMetric ranking evaluates universities across seven key areas: Setting and Infrastructure, Energy and Climate Change, Waste, Water, Transportation, Education and Research, and Governance and Digitalization. These indicators assess how effectively universities incorporate sustainability into their operations, teaching, research, institutional policies, and engagement with the wider community.

IUS recorded particularly strong results at the national level in Governance and Digitalization, Education and Research, and Setting and Infrastructure, reflecting its commitment to responsible institutional governance, academic development, and creating a more sustainable campus environment. Through its educational activities, research, and institutional practices, IUS continues to promote environmental awareness, innovation, and responsible resource management among students and staff.

This achievement also reinforces IUS's commitment to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which provide a global framework for addressing environmental, social, and economic challenges. By incorporating sustainability into its institutional priorities, the University contributes to advancing responsible higher education and fostering a culture of environmental and social responsibility.

As sustainability becomes an increasingly important priority for universities worldwide, IUS remains committed to strengthening its institutional performance, expanding sustainability-related initiatives, and creating lasting benefits for its students, staff, and the wider community.

By combining academic excellence, responsible governance, and a commitment to sustainable development, IUS continues to contribute to a more sustainable future for Bosnia and Herzegovina and beyond.
