Bosnia and Herzegovina’s Quality Assurance System Receives Strong European Recognition

The Agency for Development of Higher Education and Quality Assurance of Bosnia and Herzegovina (HEA) has successfully completed its external review conducted by the European Association for Quality Assurance in Higher Education (ENQA). The international review panel concluded that HEA is overall compliant with the Standards and Guidelines for Quality Assurance in the European Higher Education Area (ESG), having found the Agency compliant with 12 out of 14 evaluated standards.

The report, published in September 2026, highlighted HEA’s strong stakeholder engagement, comprehensive training program for accreditation experts, and the positive impact of its accreditation criteria on enhancing the quality of higher education in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

This outcome represents an important step towards HEA’s full membership in ENQA and registration in the European Quality Assurance Register for Higher Education (EQAR), further strengthening the international recognition of the quality assurance system in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

For the International University of Sarajevo (IUS), this development is particularly significant as the University is currently undergoing program accreditation procedures. The successful review reinforces confidence in the national quality assurance framework and supports the continued alignment of higher education in Bosnia and Herzegovina with European standards and good practices.

Beyond its importance for HEA, this achievement represents an important success for Bosnia and Herzegovina as a whole. A strong and internationally recognized quality assurance system benefits all higher education institutions in the country, enhances international credibility and visibility, and creates a more favorable environment for current and future accreditation processes.

The International University of Sarajevo (IUS) recognizes the dedication and professionalism of Mr. Mahir Zajmović, Acting Director of HEA, together with the Agency’s staff, whose efforts contributed to this important achievement for higher education in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
