On Tuesday, March 7, 2017, African Student Association organized the lecture of Dr. Jared O’Neil Bell titled “Africa and Withdrawal from ICC”. The lecture was about African states’ withdrawal from the International Criminal Court (ICC).
ICC is an International Court established under the agreement of Rome Statute, and all states that ratified the agreement are obliged to respect the international law on the prevention of war crimes, crimes against humanity. Dr. Jared O’Neil Bell gave a lecture on the current affairs regarding the relationship between the ICC and African countries. The speaker stressed the reasons why African states accuse the International Court. He said that African states propose withdrawal from the ICC due to the sentiment that it is a neo-colonist instrument used against African state by the West.
The speaker has sent a message on how to advocate justice for victims of war crimes and mass atrocities committed during conflicts. Assist. Prof. Dr. Joseph Jon Kaminski, Assist. Prof. Dr. Goran Šimić, and Senior Assistant Endris Mekonnen Faris attended the event, contributing with their valuable insights to the lecture.
