Prof. Dr. Federico Reggio Revisits the Case of Socrates at IUS

What can the trial of Socrates teach us about democracy today? This question brought ancient history into a contemporary legal and philosophical discussion during a public lecture by Prof. Dr. Federico Reggio of the University of Padua, hosted by the IUS Faculty of Law (FLW).

Entitled “Democracy on Trial: Workshop on the Case of Socrates,” the lecture explored connections between the understanding of democracy in ancient Athens and its interpretation in contemporary society. Drawing on the case of Socrates, Prof. Dr. Reggio invited participants to reflect on questions that remain central to legal scholarship, political philosophy and democratic theory.

The lecture highlighted the continuing relevance of debates that began more than two thousand years ago. By placing ancient and contemporary perspectives in dialogue, it offered an opportunity to examine the values underpinning democracy and the rule of law, and to consider how those values are understood and upheld today.

Such academic encounters create valuable space for critical reflection beyond the classroom. They encourage participants to revisit familiar concepts, question assumptions and engage thoughtfully with the principles that shape legal and political life.

The IUS Faculty of Law extends its sincere appreciation to Prof. Dr. Federico Reggio for his thought-provoking lecture and for sharing his expertise with the University community. We wish him continued success in his academic and professional work.
