The Faculty of Law (FLW) at the International University of Sarajevo (IUS) opened a new season of its Public Lecture Series on Thursday, October 22, 2026, with an online lecture examining the legal position of incarcerated women in Spain. Delivered by Prof. Dr. María del Mar Martín Aragón from the University of Seville, Spain, the lecture, titled “Incarcerated Women: A Case Study of Spain,” addressed questions of rights, rehabilitation and social reintegration.
Professor Martín Aragón presented the legal framework governing the rights and obligations of incarcerated women, paying particular attention to the challenges they face in exercising those rights and fulfilling their obligations. Her presentation highlighted the importance of considering how legal provisions apply in practice and affect women’s experiences within the prison system.
The lecture also examined gaps in the legal framework and the opportunities available to incarcerated women for rehabilitation and reintegration into society. By bringing these issues into focus, Professor Martín Aragón offered valuable insights into an area of legal scholarship that often receives limited public attention.
The lecture provided a thoughtful opening to the new season of the FLW Public Lecture Series, inviting reflection on the relationship between legal protection, the realities of incarceration and the prospects for life after release.
The Faculty of Law sincerely thanks Professor Martín Aragón for sharing her expertise and contributing to the series, and wishes her continued success in her research and academic work.
