Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) Training at IUS

ACT Training

The Psychology (PSY) study program at the International University of Sarajevo (IUS), in collaboration with the IUS Lifelong Learning Center, proudly organized an intensive Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) training on April 25-26, 2025. The training was led by Associate Professor Dr. Çağdaş Öykü Meriç, a distinguished psychiatrist specializing in cognitive-behavioral and third-wave psychotherapy models. With his extensive clinical and academic experience, Dr. Meriç has contributed significantly to the dissemination of modern therapeutic approaches, offering dynamic and practice-oriented training sessions for mental health professionals both in Türkiye and internationally.

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) is a cutting-edge, evidence-based psychotherapy model that combines mindfulness techniques with value-based behavioral strategies. Rather than focusing solely on symptom reduction, ACT aims to build psychological flexibility - helping individuals stay connected with the present moment and take meaningful actions despite difficult thoughts or emotions. As part of the "third wave" of cognitive-behavioral therapies, ACT has demonstrated effectiveness across a wide range of psychological difficulties, including anxiety, depression, PTSD, and chronic pain conditions.

For students of Psychology Bachelor's and Clinical Psychology Master's programs at IUS, this training provided a valuable opportunity to deepen their understanding of contemporary therapeutic approaches, enhance their theoretical knowledge, and develop practical skills essential for modern clinical practice. Exposure to ACT principles strengthens students’ ability to support clients in building resilience, embracing emotional experiences, and leading value-driven lives - competencies that are increasingly crucial in today’s diverse mental health settings.
