The IUS Turkish Language and Literature, Teaching (TLT) study program organized another enriching session within its Turkology Talks Series on Thursday, April 23, 2026. Titled “Why Do People Tell Stories?”, the talk was delivered by Mr. Ali Işık, a distinguished short story writer, and offered participants a thoughtful exploration of literature, storytelling, and creative expression.
Drawing on his own literary journey, Mr. Işık shared that he began writing at the age of 25 while still a university student. Through this personal reflection, he encouraged participants to see writing not only as an artistic activity, but also as a meaningful way of understanding oneself and the world. He emphasized that everyone should engage in some form of writing or creative production and highlighted the importance of discovering a literary genre that best suits one’s own voice and interests.
During the talk, particular attention was given to the role of literature in helping people better understand life, society, and human nature. Reading was described as one of the most important paths toward recognizing and understanding both humanity and the world, while storytelling itself was presented as a deeply human act that connects experience, emotion, and meaning.
As part of the program, Bağlar Magazine was also introduced to the audience, and two guests from the magazine’s editorial board joined the event. Their presence added an additional dimension to the discussion, offering participants insight into contemporary literary production and editorial work.
