International University of Sarajevo alumnus Ibrahim-Halil Jarraya Salihović has achieved an important international milestone by becoming the first participant from Bosnia and Herzegovina to attend the Académie de la Mer de Monaco.
Held in the Principality of Monaco from June 29 to July 11, 2026, the third summer session of the Academy brought together a select group of participants from different countries as part of the Promotion Sainte Dévote, the program’s third generation.
Ibrahim-Halil, who graduated in Mechanical Engineering from IUS in 2025, attended the prestigious program as the first representative of Bosnia and Herzegovina at the Academy since the international program was established.
The Académie de la Mer offers an interdisciplinary exploration of seas and oceans through scientific, legal, geopolitical, economic and environmental perspectives. Guided by the motto “La mer à 360°”, or “The Sea at 360 Degrees,” the program promotes a comprehensive understanding of maritime affairs and the importance of building a sustainable future for the world’s seas and oceans.
Over the course of two intensive weeks, Ibrahim-Halil attended lectures delivered by distinguished university professors, international experts and decision-makers. The program also included panel discussions, workshops and professional visits to leading institutions in Monaco working in the fields of marine conservation, maritime law and international cooperation.
Reflecting on his academic and professional development, Ibrahim-Halil explained that his interest in maritime affairs grew through his engagement with topics such as energy, trade and international cooperation. He came to recognize the sea not only as a geographical space but also as a strategic arena where major global economic, political and environmental issues intersect.
His participation in the Academy reflects the interdisciplinary direction of his education and career. In addition to his Mechanical Engineering degree from IUS, he is pursuing a master’s degree in International Relations and Diplomacy and completing studies in Arabic and French languages and literatures. His international experience also includes periods of study in France and Latvia through the Erasmus+ program.
For Ibrahim-Halil, representing Bosnia and Herzegovina at such a distinguished international program was both an honor and an opportunity to contribute to a global network of young professionals and experts committed to marine protection, sustainability and stronger international cooperation.
His achievement demonstrates how a strong technical education, combined with international experience and interdisciplinary learning, can open doors to exceptional opportunities around the world.
