On the 7th of December of 2016, Dr. Mario Hibert, Head of the Department of Comparative Literature of the University of Sarajevo, held the lecture under the title Information Ethics in the Age of Digital Commons: Copyright and Plagiarism at Department of Arts of International University of Sarajevo. Introductory lecture was given by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Lejla Panjeta, Head of Department of Arts. Dr. Panjeta stressed the importance of copyrights in arts and gave examples from the industry.
Dr. Hibert explained aspects of intellectual property and what does the law of copyright protects. He questioned the idea that “piracy is an act of theft “ and explained the importance of rethinking copyrights in terms of remix culture. Dr. Hibert made an important point that laws usually don’t change together with the progress of technology and what are the ways for use of material without copyright infringement and under the fair use.
After the successful lecture Dr. Hibert visitied the Dean of FASS, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Mustafa Bal and discussed the state of education in Bosnia in the fields of humanities and social sciences, as well as arts. The features of plagiarism and copyrights in global and local contexts were debated as well.
Dr. Hibert holds a doctoral degree in information and communication science from Faculty of Philosophy, University of Zagreb, Croatia. He obtained his Master's Degree in Human Rights and Democracy from Center for Interdisciplinary Postgraduate Studies, University of Sarajevo. Dr. Hibert has published scientific and professional articles in the fields of information and library science in Bosnia and English.
