Public lecture "Nanoscience and Nanotechnology: Progress, Challenges and Opportunities" held at IUS

Sarajevo, October 16th 2009

On October 16th 2009, IUS hosted Prof. Dr. Hilmi Ünlü of the Istanbul Technical University who held public lecture titled "Nanoscience and Nanotechnology: Progress, Challenges and Opportunities". The lecture started at 14.30 and was attended by a number of individuals interested in this topic.

Prof. Dr. Ünlü opened presentation with the reflection on technological revolutions and their impact on the society and continued to show history of the nanoscience and nanotechnology. Presentation also encompassed scientific and technological activities of the last decade that have shown an explosion in the "nano" area with the immense increase in the number of publications and the number of related journals, commensurate with this increasing number of publications. Lecture was followed by a question session.

Nanotechnology is defined as the "creation and utilization of functional materials, devices, and systems with novel properties and functions that are achieved through the control and restructuring of matter at nanoscale." Contemporary nanotechnology topics include, but not limited to bottom-up and top-down syntheses of nanoscale materials, self-assembly, nanobiotechnology, environmental aspects of nanotechnology, properties and fundamental phenomena in nanoscale materials and nanoscale devices.

Professor Ünlü graduated from the Istanbul University, earned his Ma as well as PhD from the University of Minnesota at Twin Cities Minneapolis. He is theChairman of Physics Engineering Department of the Istanbul Technical University.
