During IUS SDG Week 2026, the International University of Sarajevo hosted a series of expert lectures addressing key global and local sustainability issues, bringing together students and academics from various disciplines.
A highlight of the program was the marking of World Bee Day (May 20) with two engaging lectures by Prof. Dr. Adi Vesnić from the University of Sarajevo and Dr. Safija Softić‑Namas from the IUS Faculty of Medical Sciences. The sessions explored the importance of pollinators, the impact of climate change, and the health benefits of bee products, while emphasizing their connection to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
The event attracted students from Genetics and Bioengineering, Medicine, Psychology, Economics, and other programs, reflecting strong interdisciplinary interest. Valuable support came from Prof. Ognjen Riđić, who encouraged and accompanied Economics students, and Prof. Lejla Mustoo, who supported Psychology students, highlighting the importance of cross-disciplinary engagement.
In addition, lectures by Emir Salkić, Nejra Hodžić, and Dr. Selma Harrington provided deeper insight into sustainable architecture, smart cities, and sustainable urban development, with a particular focus on the role of architecture in shaping more inclusive, resilient, and environmentally responsible urban spaces. Their presentations connected theoretical concepts with practical examples, emphasizing innovation, participatory urban transformation, and the integration of sustainability principles into contemporary city planning, alongside discussions on circular economy approaches and environmental challenges in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Through these lectures, IUS SDG Week 2026 promoted knowledge exchange, awareness, and critical dialogue, reinforcing the role of education in addressing sustainability challenges and building a more responsible and informed society.
