VACD Alumna Lea Laleta Featured on BBC for Her Diabetes Awareness Project

Lea Laleta

The International University of Sarajevo (IUS) proudly shares the inspiring international success story of our VACD alumna, Lea Laleta, whose creativity, dedication, and humanitarian spirit have truly crossed the borders of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

During his visit to Bosnia and Herzegovina last year, BBC journalist Harry Bligh met Lea in Sarajevo while he was in urgent need of a working blood glucose monitoring sensor for diabetes. Lea offered invaluable assistance, helping him obtain the necessary medical equipment and providing support during his stay.

This encounter led the journalist to discover Lea’s remarkable personal and professional project - a children’s book that she both wrote and illustrated, designed to help young patients understand diabetes in an accessible, empathetic, and visually engaging way. Her work aims to educate children living with diabetes, empowering them through storytelling and art to better cope with the daily challenges of their condition.

Touched by Lea’s initiative and creative mission, Mr. Bligh later shared her story in a BBC World Service podcast produced to mark Diabetes Awareness Month, highlighting her dedication to health education and the powerful role of visual communication in social advocacy.

Lea’s story stands as a shining example of how IUS alumni combine artistic excellence with social responsibility. Through her work, she continues to demonstrate the global impact that compassion, creativity, and education can achieve when brought together with purpose.
