Award winning professor of the Faculty of Engineering and Natural Sciences (FENS) Assoc. Prof. Dr. Haris Gavranović organized a lecture at the International University of Sarajevo (IUS) of a renowned Prof. Dr. Cenk Sahinalp from the Centre for Bioinformatics Research School of Informatics and Computing at Bloomington, Indiana, (USA) on Thursday, December 10, 2015. IUS Rector, Prof. Dr. Yücel Oğurlu welcomed distinguished speaker in the Rectorate with his associates, Vice Rector for International Cooperation and Research Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ali Gürsel, Dean of the Faculty of Engineering and Natural Sciences (FENS), Prof. Dr. Fuat Gürcan and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Haris Gavranović. During the meeting Rector Oğurlu briefly presented information about the current work and achievements of the University and also thanked Prof. Sahinalp for taking the time to come to IUS and deliver the lecture. After the meeting, the lecture was held in the main amphitheater of the IUS.
Prof. Sahinalp’s area of research interest includes bioinformatics, theoretical computer science and algorithms. The topic of the lecture was ''Data driven research in (cancer) genomics’’. The existence of individual sequenced genomes of thousands of different people in some countries is already a reality and the need for better and more efficient algorithms has grown more than ever before. Prof. Sahinalp specially talked about the development of algorithms in our own laboratories and scientific (computational and other) challenges that lie before us by having a large genomics data. These algorithms combine combinatorial techniques in addition to basic and more advanced algorithmic techniques such as data compression, streaming, memory hierarchy and the parallelization (data compression, memory hierarchy awareness and parallelization). At the end of the lecture, students and other guests had the opportunity to talk with Prof. Sahinalp, discuss and ask questions, including those related to creating future cooperation.
