Professor Emeritus Dr. Asif Šabanović

Professor Emeritus Dr. Asif Šabanović of the International University of Sarajevo (IUS), a distinguished expert in electrical engineering and control systems, has achieved exceptional international recognition in the latest ScholarGPS rankings, confirming his place among the world’s most influential researchers in his field.

According to ScholarGPS data, Academician Asif Šabanović is ranked sixth in the world in the field of Motion Control, a highly specialized area that forms the foundation of industrial robotics, automated production systems, and modern intelligent machines. In this category, he is classified among the “Highly Ranked Scholars,” placing him within the top 0.02% of researchers worldwide.

In addition to this remarkable result, Prof. Dr. Šabanović is ranked 37th globally in Sliding Mode Control. In the specialist areas of Control System, Sliding Mode Control, and Control Theory, he is listed among “Top Scholars,” with global rankings of 0.07%, 0.13%, and 0.29%, respectively. Overall, he is ranked among the top 0.42% of scientists globally.

This recognition represents an extraordinary academic achievement, not only for Prof. Dr. Šabanović personally, but also for IUS, the Academy of Sciences and Arts of Bosnia and Herzegovina (ANUBiH), and the scientific community of Bosnia and Herzegovina as a whole.

While public discussions in Bosnia and Herzegovina often focus on brain drain and the challenges facing science and higher education, the latest international rankings show that researchers from Bosnia and Herzegovina are making contributions that are recognized at the very top of global science.

ScholarGPS, an independent global platform, first published its ranking of more than 30 million scientists worldwide in October 2024. In 2025 and 2026, the platform published updated data and rankings for 2024 and 2025, including rankings for a number of members of the Academy of Sciences and Arts of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

The platform ranks scholars exclusively on the basis of objective indicators, including published research papers indexed in leading scientific citation databases, citations, and overall quality and impact. Scientists are ranked in direct global comparison across more than 50,000 institutions.

To be ranked among the top 0.05% or 0.5% of scientists in the world means that the scholarly contribution of these researchers stands above that of more than 99.95% or 99.5% of their peers worldwide. Such results are achieved through decades of research, publication in leading scientific journals, and the global citation and use of their work by other researchers.

Prof. Dr. Asif Šabanović’s ranking is a powerful confirmation of the global relevance of scientific work coming from Bosnia and Herzegovina. His achievements demonstrate that researchers from this country continue to shape contemporary engineering, automation, and control systems at the highest international level.

IUS proudly congratulates Professor Emeritus Dr. Asif Šabanović on this outstanding recognition and celebrates his contribution to science, engineering, and the international academic reputation of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
