IUS Hosts Seminar on Climate Resilience and Urban Stability within the ADRION NATURED Project

Adrion 1

On June 24, 2025, the International University of Sarajevo (IUS) successfully hosted the third local transnational seminar within the framework of the ADRION NATURED project, under Work Package 1 – Understanding the Interaction between Climate and Cities. The event gathered experts, students, and professionals to explore critical strategies for climate adaptation in urban environments, with a strong emphasis on disaster risk management and sustainable development.

The seminar titled "Natural Disaster Management and Slope Instability Prevention through Good Practice Examples in Climate Change Strategic Planning" aimed to strengthen knowledge and foster dialogue around the impacts of climate change on urban areas, while promoting the integration of environmental, social, and economic considerations in spatial planning.

Expert Contributions

Participants had the opportunity to hear from several distinguished speakers:

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Toni Nikolić, from the University “Džemal Bijedić” of Mostar and the Federal Institute of Geology, shared valuable insights on natural disaster management, with a special focus on the October 2024 disaster in Jablanica. Drawing from his international experience, including training in Japan, Dr. Nikolić emphasized the importance of proactive geological assessment and emergency preparedness.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Jasmin Taletović, Assistant Director for GIS at the Sarajevo Canton Development Planning Institute, delivered a comprehensive presentation on terrain stability in urban areas, highlighting the risks of landslides and rockfalls in Sarajevo Canton. His talk underscored the importance of GIS technology, seismic monitoring, urban planning, and responsible land use in preventing geohazards.

Domagoj Vidaković, MA, MBA, an international consultant from the company Energodata, presented a case study on the City of Buje, Croatia, showcasing strategic urban renewal plans that integrate climate change adaptation and green infrastructure. His presentation offered practical examples of how local governments can implement climate-responsive policies.

Dr. Ismar Alagić, professor at the IUS Faculty of Engineering and Natural Sciences and project manager of NATURED at IUS, concluded the seminar with a presentation on global best practices in green building. He emphasized the relevance of sustainable architecture and energy-efficient design in addressing climate challenges.

This seminar marked another important step in IUS’s commitment to fostering academic dialogue and promoting regional collaboration in climate adaptation and sustainable urban development. The event provided a platform for meaningful exchange of knowledge and strengthened the position of IUS as an active contributor to the ADRION NATURED project, funded through the Interreg IPA Adriatic-Ionian program.
