Clean Green Digital Sarajevo: Engaging the Next Generation in Climate Action

Clean Green Digital Sarajevo

On Monday, April 21, 2025, the IUS SDG Executive Committee hosted a powerful and forward-looking lecture titled “Clean Green Digital Sarajevo: The Solutions are Already There, So What’s the Problem?” The guest speaker, Mr. Garret Patrick Kelly, coordinator of the Net Zero Sarajevo initiative, delivered an insightful presentation that brought together students from all IUS faculties interested in sustainable development and climate neutrality.

Mr. Kelly introduced the EU’s 100 Net Zero Cities Mission, a groundbreaking initiative designed to help cities - Sarajevo among them - tackle the root causes hindering effective climate action. This mission aims to create healthier, more sustainable urban environments for current and future generations. The Sarajevo Functional Urban Area, which includes both Sarajevo and East Sarajevo, has committed to achieving climate neutrality by 2030 through this European Commission-supported effort.

Following the lecture, a lively and in-depth discussion unfolded, with students posing questions that ranged from engineering solutions to policy innovation. The exchange sparked a compelling idea: to establish a student-led body representing universities across Sarajevo that would contribute to the Net Zero Sarajevo initiative.

The IUS SDG Committee enthusiastically supports this initiative and is committed to helping students organize and maintain this platform. IUS aims to serve as a central hub for student-driven climate action in Sarajevo.
