The International University of Sarajevo (IUS) hosted a high-level workshop bringing together 25 university rectors and vice-rectors from different countries, alongside distinguished academics from universities and research institutions across Europe and Asia, for a strategic exchange on the future of higher education.
Hosted by IUS Rector Prof. Dr. Ali Osman Kuşakcı, the workshop created a valuable platform for university leaders and scholars to discuss some of the key priorities shaping contemporary academia, including research, innovation, institutional development, internationalization, academic mobility and stronger inter-university cooperation. The workshop brought together rectors who were in Sarajevo for the 2nd International Anatolian Symposium on Academic Studies, organized by the International Center for Strategic Studies (Uluslararası Stratejik Araştırmalar Merkezi – USAR).
Among the participating university leaders from Türkiye were Prof. Dr. Sait Mesut Doğan, Rector of Gaziantep University; Prof. Dr. Ahmet Akkaya, Rector of Bartın University; Prof. Dr. Osman Nuri Çelik, Rector of Konya Technical University; Prof. Dr. İbrahim Özcoşar, Rector of Mardin Artuklu University; Prof. Dr. Necip Şimşek, Rector of Istanbul Commerce University; Prof. Dr. Abdurrahim Alkış, Rector of Şırnak University; Prof. Dr. İbrahim Aydın, Rector of Artvin Çoruh University; Prof. Dr. Mahmud Güngör, Rector of Pamukkale University; Prof. Dr. Musa Kazım Arıcan, Rector of Social Sciences University of Ankara; Prof. Dr. Mustafa Kasım Karahocagil, Rector of Kırşehir Ahi Evran University; Prof. Dr. Kenan Ahmet Türkdoğan, Rector of Alanya Alaaddin Keykubat University; Prof. Dr. Yücel Oğurlu, Rector of Balıkesir University; and Prof. Dr. Hüseyin Dalgar, Rector of Burdur Mehmet Akif Ersoy University.
The workshop also welcomed Prof. Dr. Necdet Hayta, Vice-Rector of Gazi University; Prof. Dr. Osman Özkendir, Vice-Rector of Tarsus University; and Prof. Dr. Muhitdin Yılmaz, Vice-Rector of Sinop University, together with other senior university representatives.
Adding a broader international dimension to the discussions were Assoc. Prof. Dr. Omer Spahić from International Islamic University Malaysia; Prof. Dr. Adam Saud from Bahria University, Pakistan; Dr. İsmail Hakkı Yavuzcan from the Center for Islamic Theology at the University of Tübingen, Germany; Assoc. Prof. Dr. Galina Miškinienė from Vilnius University, Lithuania; Prof. Dr. Osman Emin from Ss. Cyril and Methodius University in Skopje, North Macedonia; Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nurlana Mustafayeva from Baku Slavic University, Azerbaijan; Assoc. Prof. Dr. Emrah Yılmaz from Samarkand State University, Uzbekistan; and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Meleyke Mammadova from the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences.
The discussions placed particular emphasis on how universities can strengthen their research capacities, foster innovation, expand opportunities for students and academic staff, and develop more effective models of cooperation across institutions and borders.
Participants exchanged experiences and perspectives on university governance, international partnerships, student and academic mobility, joint research projects, knowledge transfer and approaches to improving the quality and impact of higher education.
For IUS, hosting such a gathering reflects the University’s growing role as a regional meeting point for academic leadership, international cooperation and strategic dialogue. By bringing senior university representatives and international scholars together in Sarajevo, IUS continues to create an environment in which new ideas can develop into lasting institutional partnerships and concrete opportunities for students, researchers and academic staff.
The workshop also emphasized the importance of moving beyond formal agreements toward cooperation built on joint research, meaningful mobility, knowledge exchange, innovation and shared institutional development.
Addressing the participants, Rector Prof. Dr. Ali Osman Kuşakcı underscored the importance of sustained dialogue and cooperation as universities respond to rapidly changing demands in higher education. The workshop provided an opportunity not only to exchange experiences, but also to identify areas in which institutions can learn from one another and build stronger collaborative networks.
As universities worldwide face shared challenges related to digital transformation, research competitiveness, internationalization and preparing graduates for a rapidly changing world, initiatives of this kind help build the trust, connections and academic networks required for long-term progress.
By hosting the workshop, IUS reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening academic ties between Bosnia and Herzegovina, Türkiye and the wider international academic community, while contributing to a more connected, innovative and globally engaged higher education landscape.
