On Friday, May 28, 2010, International University of Sarajevo organized first Symposium in the Sarajevo Lecture Series on the theme „Globalization of Higher Education, the Balkan Situation, Public vs. Private Universities“. The Symposium took place in the IUS Amphitheatre on the ground floor starting at 10.00.
Moderator of the Symposium was Prof. Dr. Harry Miller from the International University of Sarajevo and a foreign member of the Academy of Sciences and Arts of Bosnia and Herzegovina. The Symposium was followed by a large number of media from Bosnia and Herzegovina, having both State and Federal TV Stations broadcast reports on it in the prime-time.
The event was opened by IUS Vice Rector, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Muhamed Hadžiabdić who greeted the attendees. The symposium then continued with the presentation „Translating quality into quantity: What makes a good educator/university a high ranked one?“ by Mr. Bojan Šošić, Lecturer in Biological Psychology at the International University of Sarajevo.
Prof. Dr. Kemal Hanjalić, Professor Emeritus of the Faculty of Applied Sciences at the Delft University of Technology in the Netherlands and member of the IUS Board of Trustees, held a lecture on „Research evaluation – a myth or a prerequisite for joining the global research community (criteria, measures and indicators, relativisation, some examples)“
His presentation was followed by Prof. Dr. Slobodan Loga, Professor Emeritus of the Psychiatry at the University of Sarajevo and Vice President of the Academy of Sciences and Arts of Bosnia and Herzegovina and his speech on „Trends in science in Bosnia and Herzegovina, investment plans for the future. How far are we from the cutting edge?“ After Prof. Dr. Loga, Prof. Dr. Srebren Dizdar, former Dean of the Faculty of Philosophy at the University of Sarajevo talked on „Compatibility of studies between public and private universities in Bosnia and Herzegovina and the (im) possibilities of student transfer in both directions“.
The Symposium ended with the presentation by Prof. Dr. Nenad Tanović, former Dean of the Faculty of Natural Sciences and Mathematics at the University of Sarajevo on „A tale of two higher education systems – Bosnia and Herzegovina and Belgium“.
The Symposium ended with the discussion between the speakers and other guests.
