Department of Arts of IUS was honored to participate in the workshop organized by Yunus Emre Institute on traditional arts of calligraphy and illumination (hat and tazhip). Two respectable and famous Turkish artists, Savaş Çevik and Asiye Dönmez gave lectures in the IUS Gallery on the practice and theory of the art of calligraphy and illumination of the holy books after which they demonstrated the techniques and tools in use.
Asiye Dönmez was born in Eskişehir. She graduated from the division of Tezhip at Traditional Turkish Arts department of the Faculty of Fine Arts of Mimar Sinan University in 1987. In Vienna, she founded ArtOnWorks and worked as its designer between 2000 and 2003. In 2005, she founded Atelier Mim-Art in Istanbul.
Savaş Çevik was born in Akseki, Antalya in 1953. In 1976, upon receiving his Master’s degree from the Graphics Department of the Istanbul State Academy of Fine Arts, he remained in the department as assistant to Prof. Emin Barin. Since 2010, Çevik has been also teaching Foundations of Art Education courses within training programs of the Istanbul Municipality. Until 2008, Çevik had 22 individual Calligraphy exhibitions in various countries as well as participating in 90 joint exhibitions.
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Bal, Dean of FASS gave the introductory speech and presented the artists, and was fully engaged in the workshop along with Bosnian and Turkish students, as well as the Head of the Department of Arts and all other VACD academics and students. The importance of oriental art practice was clearly connected with the modern design that our students are practicing nowadays, and Department of Arts was very proud to be hosted this workshop. The artists from Turkey also visited Rectors office.
