The International University of Sarajevo (IUS) today hosted a memorable and well-attended handover ceremony, marking the official transition of leadership from Prof. Dr. Ahmet Yıldırım to Prof. Dr. Ali Osman Kuşakcı. The amphitheatre was filled to capacity with academic, administrative, and technical staff, all gathered to witness this significant moment in the university’s history.
Eight Years of Dedicated Service
Prof. Dr. Ahmet Yıldırım served as the Rector of IUS for eight years, leading the institution with unwavering dedication, enthusiasm, and a clear focus on academic excellence. Under his leadership, the university expanded its study programs, enhanced the quality of education, and celebrated major milestones – most notably, the opening of the Faculty of Medical Sciences.
In his farewell address, Prof. Yıldırım expressed deep gratitude to all IUS staff for their commitment to making IUS the best private university in Bosnia and Herzegovina. He also thanked the SEDEF Foundation and the IUS Board of Trustees for their continuous support and investments, which have been pivotal to the university’s growth.
Recognition and Words of Gratitude
SEDEF Foundation President, Mr. Hasan Topaloğlu, presented Prof. Yıldırım with a token of appreciation, commending his outstanding contributions. He wished the outgoing rector great success in his new professional and personal chapter in Istanbul. Looking ahead, Mr. Topaloğlu reaffirmed the foundation’s commitment to supporting IUS through further investments in new infrastructure, laboratories, buildings, and student dormitories planned for the upcoming year.
A Vision for the Future
The ceremony continued with the symbolic passing of the Rector’s gown to Prof. Dr. Ali Osman Kuşakcı, who then delivered his inaugural speech. He began by thanking Prof. Yıldırım for establishing a strong foundation and pledged to continue building upon it.
Prof. Kuşakcı outlined an ambitious vision for IUS, emphasizing the goal of becoming an even more internationally vibrant institution. Plans include strengthening global partnerships, expanding student exchange opportunities, launching new double diploma programs, and increasing contributions to science through more international research projects, publications, and researcher support.
Acknowledging the transformative impact of artificial intelligence on education, Prof. Kuşakcı stressed that IUS must embrace technological advancements by adapting teaching methods, developing new digital skills, and preparing students to collaborate effectively with AI. He concluded with a call to action:
“Let’s continue to grow, innovate, and open our doors to the world.”
The event closed on a note of optimism, signaling a new chapter in IUS’s journey – one that blends respect for past achievements with a bold vision for the future.
