IUS Team Wins First Place in Balkan Inter-University Search and Rescue Competition

Search and Rescue Competition

The International University of Sarajevo (IUS) proudly celebrates the outstanding achievement of its students, who secured first place in the "Inter-University Search and Rescue Competition of Balkan Countries." This event was organized by the Balkan Cooperation Administration Edirne, in partnership with Trakya University, Edirne Municipality, and AFAD (Disaster and Emergency Management Authority).

The IUS team, comprised of Omer Kosar, İbrahim Halil Küçükaytekin, Ali Küçükaytekin, Emrehan Barlas, Elguin Kazumovi, Halil İbrahim Şahin, Sait Yücel, Ahmet Furkan Sipahi, and Muhamed Said Sincar, competed against 15 teams and 159 students from Turkey, Greece, Bulgaria, Albania, Kosovo, Moldova, North Macedonia, and Romania.

After three days of intensive theoretical and practical training provided by AFAD teams, the students participated in a variety of competitions, including debris entry, working in debris, artificial climbing, tent setup, and search and rescue in natural environments.

The organizers highlighted the critical role of search and rescue teams in emergencies, noting the many lives saved through their efforts. A recent example is the 2023 earthquake in Turkey, where search and rescue teams played a crucial role in rescuing people trapped under collapsed buildings.

We extend our congratulations to our diligent and dedicated students for this remarkable accomplishment.
