International University of Sarajevo Hosts Unity Model UN Conference

From February 21–23, the International University of Sarajevo (IUS) hosted the Unity Model UN (UMUN) conference, organized by the Unity Organization and the IUS Faculty of Business and Administration, with support from the Embassy of Switzerland, the Embassy of the Czech Republic to Bosnia and Herzegovina and Care Balkans. Over 60 delegates engaged in three days of intense debate and consultation, with each of the four committees producing outcome documents addressing major global issues.

The UN Security Council, led by Haris Bošnjaković and Danin Mujčinović, tackled the Middle East crisis. Delegates demonstrated exceptional diplomacy and problem-solving skills. Top honors went to representatives of Saudi Arabia (Ali Esad Jakubović, Gymnasium Obala Sarajevo), Turkey (Džan Zelić, Gymnasium SSST), and the USA (Senad Bibanović, IUS).

Chaired by IUS students Amina Cerović and Silma Jahić, the Fourth Committee of the UN General Assembly examined neo-imperialism and lingering colonial influences. Outstanding delegates included Spain (Maja Karić, First Bosniak Gymnasium Sarajevo), the UK (Emma Stanišić, KSC “Sveti Pavao” Zenica), France (Bella Jiron, Third Gymnasium Sarajevo), and Ireland (Hannah Englander, Fourth Gymnasium Sarajevo).

The UN Commission for Social Development, under Nedim Tabaković and Tajra Pintol, focused on minority rights and equality. Notable delegates were China (Amila Andelija, RPS Tuzla), the USA (Selma Adilović, Gymnasium SSST), and Bosnia-Herzegovina (Eldin Bulja, First Bosniak Gymnasium Sarajevo).

Finally, the UN Human Rights Council, chaired by Daris Goletić and Boszo Koppany, addressed femicide and gender-related violence. Recognized delegates included Egypt (Zuber Mohamed, Third Gymnasium Sarajevo), Spain (Vedad Dedović, First Bosniak Gymnasium Sarajevo), and Germany (Enver Duraković, RPS Tuzla).

Closing the conference, Secretary-General Haris Bošnjaković remarked, “This event would not have happened without you all. It’s up to all of us to bring it to a close together.”

The organizing board expressed gratitude to all participants, sponsors, and attendees, congratulating the delegates for their remarkable contributions to tackling global challenges.
