Intercultural Communications Club of the International University of Sarajevo continued with the good practice of organizing interesting lectures for students by inviting Mr. Bashy Quraishy, Chairman of the Advisory Council of European Network against Racism, to give talk on "Freedom of Speech Versus Incitement to Hatred".
The lecture was held on Wednesday, December 1, 2010 at the Amphitheatre on the ground floor.
Stating his honor to be in Sarajevo for the first time, Mr. Quraishy said that he read about horrible crimes that happened in this city in 92-95 and urged students to continue with the tradition of interculturality that this area fostered through history.
Continuing with the lecture, Mr. Quraishy presented his thesis that, upon his experience, "freedom of expression has never been unlimited and absolute" and asked students to have a discussion about it. He then talked about the situation in Denmark when 12 caricatures of Prophet Muhammad were published in daily newspapers, and explained the difference between criticism and mockery or ridicule. "Criticism should always have goal, it should never exist for the sake of criticisms itself, because it is then contra productive" said Mr. Quraishy. Words of Mr. Quraishy were followed by up-to-date examples from mainstream media.
