On Friday, May 8, 2026, the IUS Faculty of Engineering and Natural Sciences (FENS) welcomed Dr. Ing. Jasmin Jahić, Director of Studies in Computer Science at Queens’ College, University of Cambridge, for a guest lecture held as part of the FENS Talks series. Through this series, FENS regularly hosts distinguished experts from outside the University to share insights into current developments in science and technology.
The lecture attracted both faculty members and students eager to hear from one of the field’s notable researchers and practitioners.
In his presentation, titled “AI in Software Architecture and Software Engineering,” Dr. Jahić offered a thought-provoking exploration of the ways in which Generative AI is transforming software development. Drawing on his own published research, he emphasized that although AI tools such as large language models can generate code efficiently, the role of the human engineer remains essential.
As Dr. Jahić noted, “Humans still need to do the final check,” cautioning against unquestioning reliance on AI-generated outputs. His lecture covered four key areas: an overview of software engineering, an introduction to Generative AI, the practical applications and limitations of AI in software development, and the skills students will need to succeed in an increasingly AI-assisted industry.
A central message of the lecture was that coding represents only one part of what software engineers do. Dr. Jahić stressed the continued importance of understanding context, evaluating quality, and making sound architectural decisions - areas in which human judgment remains irreplaceable.
The lecture concluded with a lively discussion on the future of software engineering, encouraging students to reflect critically on both the opportunities and responsibilities that come with the growing integration of AI into the field.
