What does it mean to truly step out of your comfort zone and experience the world through a new lens? For IUS Architecture students Anastasija Tadić and Hana Kapidžić, their Erasmus+ exchange at JUNIA in Lille, France, was exactly that—a journey of academic discovery, personal growth, and international connection.
As part of the long-standing partnership between the International University of Sarajevo (IUS) and JUNIA—the School of Science and Engineering of Lille Catholic University, France’s largest private, non-profit university—our students continue to benefit from opportunities that go far beyond the classroom.
For Anastasija, the experience in Lille opened new ways of thinking about architecture. Working in multicultural teams and engaging with different approaches to design allowed her to better understand how theory connects with real-world practice. “The exchange in Lille was one of the most significant experiences during my studies,” she reflects, highlighting how exposure to sustainability-focused design and urban context reshaped her academic perspective.
Hana describes her Erasmus year as a truly defining chapter. Through the Smart and Resilient Cities program, she explored innovative approaches to urban development while collaborating with students from around the world. “It gave me the opportunity to step into a completely new environment, challenge myself, and grow in ways I had not expected,” she shares.
Beyond academics, both students emphasize the impact of living in a new cultural environment. The city of Lille—with its unique blend of historical and contemporary architecture—became an open classroom, offering inspiration at every corner. At the same time, daily life abroad brought challenges that strengthened their independence, adaptability, and confidence.
Perhaps most importantly, the experience fostered lasting international friendships and broadened their worldview—reminding us that education is not only about knowledge, but also about connection, perspective, and growth.
At IUS, we take pride in creating such opportunities for our students. Through Erasmus+ mobility and strong partnerships like the one with JUNIA, we continue to support the development of globally minded graduates ready to shape the future of their professions.
