Public lecture „Great Islamic Monuments“ held at IUS

Week of quality workshops at IUS

On September 28th 2009 academicians, students and all other individuals interested in and dealing with culture, heritage, Islamic art and architecture had an unique opportunity to listen to an interesting public lecture titled „Great Islamic monuments“. The lecture was given by an Islamic art and architectural historian Dr. Elizabeth Schotten Merklinger, frequent university and museum lecturer, at IUS Conference hall starting at 14 o’clock.

After one-hour lecture that included the presentation of the most beautiful examples of Islamic architecture, a discussion about the topic between the guest speaker Dr. Merklinger and the guests followed. At the end of the lecture, Dr. Merklinger was given a token of appreciation by Mr. Ali Gunes, Acting Dean of the IUS Faculty of Art and Social Sciences.

The lecture „Great Islamic monuments“ was the part of the Academic Lecture Series, monthly event at IUS that aims for researchers, academicians and students to share their knowledge and experience with others.

Dr. Elizabeth Schotten Merklinger received BA and MA degrees from Cambridge University (UK) and a PhD in History and Architectural History from Delhi University, India. She is the author of a number of scholarly publications including two books on Islamic architecture, Sultanate Architecture of PreMughal India (2005) and Indian Islamic Architecture: The Deccan (1982). She has taught at a number of universities in North America and Europe, among them Carleton University (Ottawa, Canada), University of Ottawa (Ottawa, Canada), Concordia University (Montreal), Cambridge University (UK), Oxford University (UK), Georgetown University (Washington, D.C.) and the Smithsonian Institution (Washington, D.C.).
