The Political Science and International Relations (PSIR) Department at the International University of Sarajevo proudly celebrates the success of its distinguished alumnus, Dr. Semir Džebo, whose academic journey has led him to one of the world’s most prestigious institutions — the University of Oxford.
Dr. Džebo currently serves as a Postdoctoral Researcher at the Centre for Socio-Legal Studies (CSLS), Faculty of Law, University of Oxford, where he has been working on the HuRiEE project since September 2025. His research focuses on human rights consciousness — how individuals in different political environments perceive, internalize, and act upon human rights claims. By examining contexts such as Hungary, Romania, Poland, and Ukraine, his work provides valuable insights into how varying degrees of democratic backsliding and open conflict shape the understanding and mobilization of human rights.
Before joining Oxford, Dr. Džebo completed his PhD in Political Science at Central European University (CEU) in Vienna in May 2025. His doctoral dissertation explored individual preferences toward territorial politics in modern states, further reflecting his deep engagement with complex questions of political identity and state legitimacy.
Dr. Džebo’s academic path began at the International University of Sarajevo, where he earned his BA in International and Public Relations, followed by an MA in International Relations from Central European University. His long-standing interest in ethnic conflict, political violence, terrorism and counterterrorism, and irregular warfare continues to guide his research and teaching philosophy.
The IUS community is immensely proud of Dr. Semir Džebo’s accomplishments and his continued contribution to advancing the understanding of human rights, democracy, and political behavior in today’s complex world. His journey stands as an inspiring example for current and future IUS students striving to make an impact in academia and beyond.
