The Federal Ministry of Education and Science, in cooperation with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), recently announced a Public Call for the Financing/Co-financing of Scientific Research and Research-Development Projects with Applied Use in the Economy of the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina. This initiative aims to support innovative research that addresses real-world challenges and contributes to the development of the local economy.

The general objective of the Public Call is to foster scientific and research-development projects that deliver tangible benefits to the economy. It seeks to bridge the investment gap in innovation and R&D while enhancing the quality of research, development, and innovation activities across the country.

Specific goals of the Call include:

  • Promoting stronger collaboration between research institutions and the private sector;
  • Enhancing the capacity of researchers and institutions to apply scientific knowledge in industry;
  • Supporting market- and industry-oriented projects that generate added value;
  • Encouraging innovation through partnerships that result in new or improved products, services, business models, or processes with intellectual property potential.

The project "Optimization of Air Purification Technologies in Classrooms through Measurements and CFD Simulations" is being implemented based on the Public Call of the Ministry for Supporting Scientific Research and Research and Development Projects with Practical Application in the Economy in the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina, in collaboration with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the projects "Better Governance for Faster Economic Growth" (EGG2) and "Translating the Framework for the Implementation of Sustainable Development Goals in BiH into Sustainable and Inclusive Growth" (SDG2BiH) – R&D grant scheme in 2024.

As part of this initiative, the International University of Sarajevo (IUS) is proud to announce that Prof. Dr. Muhamed Hadžiabdić has been awarded a competitive research grant, co-funded by the UNDP and the European Union (EU), under this Public Call.

His project, titled “Optimization of Air Purification Technologies in Classrooms through Measurements and CFD Simulations,” focuses on improving indoor air quality in classrooms—especially during the fall and winter months, when pollution levels are typically elevated in urban areas of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

This eight-month initiative, funded by the UNDP and the European Union (EU), is supported by project partners ENOVA d.o.o. and InventoPro d.o.o. The dedicated project team, led by Prof. Dr. Hadžiabdić, includes IUS students, esteemed local and international experts, as well as industry partners. The project will evaluate the performance of air purifiers in classroom environments using both indoor and outdoor air quality measurements. The team will test various purifier configurations to identify the most effective methods for reducing indoor pollution during high-smog episodes.

Findings from this research are expected to lead to practical recommendations for enhancing air quality in educational institutions and could also be applicable to other public buildings.

The International University of Sarajevo extends its sincere gratitude to the Federal Ministry of Education and the UNDP for their invaluable support. Through this collaboration, we strive to make a meaningful contribution to the health and well-being of our communities.
