Workshop "Towards Research University in B&H" held at IUS

With an aim to motivate young researchers and assistants for interdisciplinary research program at International University of Sarajevo, IUS organized two day workshop titled “Towards research University in Bosnia and Herzegovina”. The workshop took place in Conference Hall on March 11 and 12, 2010 and hosted a large number of interested participants who used this opportunity to have interesting discussions.

The opening remarks at the workshop were given by IUS Rector Prof. Dr. Hilmi Ünlü who expressed his hope in establishing Research Centre at IUS, where scientist from different disciplines could come together and share their experiences. He then proceeded with presentation on research in the area of nanotechnology. The speech of Prof. Dr. Ünlü was followed by the presentation of scientific activities at IUS given by IUS Graduate Coordinator Prof. Dr. Mehmed Can. Prof. Dr. Can gave insight into the IUS graduate program that aims to fullfill needs of Bosnian-Herzegovinian society in social research. He then presented both completed and ongoing research projects at IUS.

Dr. Mehmet Aksit from the University of Twente in The Netherlands shared his research experiences while talking on „Models for Creating a Successful University“. He concluded that the continuation of evolution of society and technology demands agile research university. Dr. Bisera Turkovic, former Bosnian Ambassador to United States and IUS lecturer, then gave presentation „The State of Research in Political Science in Bosnia and Herzegovina and the Potential Contribution of IUS“. In her talk, Dr. Turkovic asked all people present to think on how to be self-sustainable, after which she showed potential ways of getting research funds.

After lunch break, workshop continued with presentations by three IUS Deans Assoc. Prof. Dr. Cevat Sarioglu, Assist. Prof. Dr. Hasan Korkut and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ali Günes in which they talked about research potentials at their respective faculties. Following were the presentations by Prof. Dr. Abdulrezzak Memon, Genetics and Bioengineering Program Coordinator, titled “Functional Genomics in Eukaryotic Cells” and by Assist. Prof. Dr. Muamer Hasanovic “Modern RF Design”. First day of the workshop was closed with presentation by Dr. Mirsad Serdarevic on Research and Immigrant Issues in Psychology.

Second day of the workshop was more focused on funding opportunities in the presentations given by IUS Vice Rector Assoc. Prof. Dr. Muhamed Hadžiabdic and Assis. Prof. Dr. Kutluk Özgüven. IUS guest from Australia, Dr. Tuba Boz delivered presentation on Conducting International Research Case Study: Social Protection among Turkish Residents in Australia and Germany, while Assoc. Prof. Dr. Fikret Caliskan presented topic “Control System Technologies”. The workshop ended with panel discussion “International University of Sarajevo: Towards Research University”.
