International University of Sarajevo (IUS) hosted with Journal of Genocide Research organized a Workshop titled: ''The Impact of War on Ottoman Era Cities'' on Friday, November 20, 2015. The Workshop brought together experts and professors from different countries of Europe and Asia. On behalf of the organizer, IUS Rector, Prof. Dr. Yücel Oğurlu welcomed the participants of the Workshop and thanked professors Cathie Carmichael from the University of East Anglia, United Kingdom, and Mesut Idriz for having IUS as a venue for this Workshop.
Dr. Božidar Jezernik, Professor at the Department of Ethnology and Cultural Anthropology of the University of Ljubljana, gave a keynote during the opening of the Workshop and talked about the layout of the Balkans under the Ottoman rule. ''It was a place of multiculturalism and religious tolerance. We can say that in the Ottoman Empire, people of different faiths and nations lived mixed, and mixed among them. It was not how we imagine it today, when we talk about multiculturalism and tolerance, but members of different nations and religions lived peacefully with each other'' - said Prof. Jezernik.
The first session of the Workshop titled “Cities of the Ottoman era” attracted the attention and participation of professors from the International University of Sarajevo (IUS), the European University Institute in Florence (Italy), University of East Anglia (United Kingdom), Trakya University in Edirne (Turkey). After the first session, there was a round table discussion with the theme ‘’Sarajevo siege 1992-93’’. The second session titled ''Ottoman population'' brought together professors from the London School of Economics, University of Firat - Elazig, the University of Tripoli, and Dicle University, Diyerbakir in Turkey.
