Turkish Ambassador Koç visited “Isa-beg Ishaković” Elementary

H.E. Haldun Koç, Ambassador of the Republic of Turkey to Bosnia and Herzegovina, visited the first private elementary school in BiH “Isa-beg Ishaković”, which conducts activities as part of Foundation for Education Development Sarajevo (SEDEF) on September 12, 2017.

Foundation for Education Development Sarajevo is the foundation that has completed the hierarchy of its educational system and offers education from the nursery to the higher education stages, by running “Kid IUS” kindergarten, “Isa-beg Ishaković” elementary school, International University of Sarajevo (IUS), and the recently founded high school “Maarif Koledž”.

Ambassador Koç visited the elementary school premises, talked to students and met with the president of Foundation for Education Development Sarajevo, Mr. Hasan Toplaoğlu, elementary school principal Nezira Popovac, and high school principal Mubera Halilčević. Mr. Mehmet Akif Yaman, director of Yunus Emre Institute, was also present in the meeting.

During the meeting, Ambassador Koç emphasized the importance of having institutions such as SEDEF in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

“The presence of educational institutions such as SEDEF is extremely important for BiH, but also for the entire Balkans. Especially in the period after the Coup in Turkey, the ways in which FETO was conducting activities in this country and many others were revealed, i.e. the ways in which they abused schooling and education. For this reason, educational institutions such as this are important, so that people in BiH may sleep peacefully when they send kids to this school”, said Koç.

Mr. Hasan Toplaoğlu, the Foundation president, emphasized the fact that SEDEF foundation has been active in Bosnia and Herzegovina for the past 15 years, and during that time the brand name International University of Sarajevo (IUS) has become prominent not only in BiH, but also in the Balkans and the rest of Europe.

Toplaoğlu said that the presence of SEDEF educational institutions is important because institutions are still active in BiH which are connected with the terrorist organization FETO, the main culprit behind the attempted coup in Turkey in July 2016. In his words, SEDEF educational institutions had a significant part in this matter, meaning that public interest for FETO schools has disappeared.

Nezira Popovac, the elementary school principal, said that the First elementary school "Isa-beg Ishaković" has been breaking records of the student numbers every year. This year, school has accommodated a total 220 students from 12 countries.

She said that the students come from countries such as BiH, Turkey, Azerbaijan, Australia, Egypt, Iran, Russia, Jordan, Montenegro, Kosovo, Macedonia and the USA.

She also added that 87 students are pursuing their education according to the Kanton Sarajevo curriculum, whilst 123 students are attending Cambridge Program.

Later that day, Mr. Toplaoğlu visited regional Sarajevo office of Anadolu Agency (AA) for the Balkans, and was welcomed there by Mr. Hakan Çelik, the office director, who informed the guest about the work of the agency.
