PhD defence by Hikmet Karčić at International University of Sarajevo

On Friday, July 13, 2018, Dr. Hikmet Karčić defended his doctoral dissertation entitled "Detention Camps as a Tool for Ethno-Religious Cleansing of Non-Serbs in Bosnia and Herzegovina", at International University of Sarajevo. Prominent IUS professors were members of the Committee for Defense of Doctoral Dissertation, chair Prof.Dr. Aliye Fatma Mataraci, and members Dr. Mirsad Karić, Dr. Muhidin Mulalić, Dr. Admir Mulaosmanovic, and professor at the Faculty of Political Sciences UNSA, dr. Sead Turčalo, who in the end congratulated Mr. Karčić on a detailed and comprehensive study on this subject, which, even two decades after the end of the war, is extremely relevant and current.

Hikmet Karčić is a senior associate at the Institute for Tradition of Bosniaks. He graduated from the Faculty of Law in Sarajevo in 2010. He defended the master thesis "Role and importance of appeals before the Human Rights Chamber in the process of searching for missing persons from 1996 to 2003”, at the same faculty". He worked at the Missing Persons Institute of Bosnia and Herzegovina, the Centre for Advanced Studies, and was the coordinator of the project "Mapping Camps and Detention Camps in Bosnia and Herzegovina 1992-1995" at the TPOS Association.

He is the producer of the documentary "Days of Killing" (Al Jazeera Balkans, 2013), and "Bloody Visegrad on Drina" (Haber and Ćuprija, 2014). He is the author of the book "By Appellations to the Truth" (Konrad Adenauer Stiftung, 2013). He prepared and translated the "Muslim World: Population and Religiousness" (Centre for Advanced Studies, 2013) and "Balkan Wars 1912-1913: Death and Forced Exile of Ottoman Muslims" (Institute for Research of Crimes against Humanity and International Law, 2012), he is a member of Muslim-Jewish Conference (MJC) and participated in numerous programs and seminars. His interests include: international law, genocide and holocaust studies, transitional justice, collective memory, human rights and history.

The International University of Sarajevo congratulates Dr. Karcic on a defended doctoral dissertation and is pleased that he joined the path of eminent experts in the socio-political life of BiH who have crowned their education at our university
