In memory of the battle of Çanakkale

In memory of the battle of Çanakkale event was organized at the International University of Sarajevo (IUS) on Wednesday, March 18, 2015. '' Battle of Çanakkale/Gallipoli '' which took place on the Turkish peninsula in 1915 was marked with this interesting lecture as one of the most important battles in the area during the First World War. IUS Rector, Prof. Dr. Yücel Oğurlu delivered an opening speech emphasizing that every man must remember history. '' In memory of the honorable and brave people who defended their homeland, the least we can do is to recognize their sacrifice, remember them and talk about this historical event in order to learn and never forget '' - said Rector Oğurlu.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Metin Boşnak spoke at the presentation about this important battle in modern history. He pointed out that the basis of the combined forces of the British Empire and France, which led this battle only intended to capture the Constantinople and establish control over the strategically important straits of Bosphorus and Dardanelles. Assist. Prof. Dr. Mirsad Karić, Vice-Rector for International Cooperation and Research, talked about the role of Bosniaks in the Battle of Çanakkale as well.

''Doing research on this battle, I learned that close to 16,000 soldiers from Bosnia and Sandžak participated on the side of the former Ottoman Empire. This is an important detail if we talk about history, because it proves how loyal and brave the Bosniaks were, but it also speaks about a reasonable number of soldiers who gave their support during this battle '' - said Vice-Rector Karić. At the end of the lecture, a brief presentation and an interesting documentary about the Battle of Çanakkale was shown to the audience.
