Launching of the Association of UNA-BiH at IUS

Opening Ceremony of the United Nations Association Club in BiH (UNA-BIH) was held in the main amphitheater of the International University of Sarajevo (IUS) on Thursday, December 17, 2015. According to one of the members of Association, Amina Agović, this organization primarily assembles IUS students and plans to expand its activities on the state level too through NGO association. The UN Association in Bosnia and Herzegovina will act in the future through educational workshops, promotion of peace, security and development.

In the presence of United Nations representative, Mr Aris Seferović (Head of Office of the UN Resident Coordinator in BiH), and a large number of students and professors from IUS as well as University Rector, Prof. Dr. Yücel Oğurlu at the opening ceremony. In his address, Rector Oğurlu said that he is satisfied that IUS students have initiated the idea of ​​forming an association. "I am happy to see that the IUS is growing and developing in all areas. This is a great privilege, but also a challenge for the students and staff of the IUS. I hope that this association will be a model and basis for all other organizations in the country and the region" said Rector Oğurlu. The speech of Aris Seferović was mainly about the structure and jobs of the UN in Bosnia and Herzegovina. He also appreciated the launching of UNA-BiH at IUS and he promised the United Nation support to UNA-BiH in the upcoming activities and developing.

The main organizer of this event was Professor Mohamed E. Yahia from the Faculty of Engineering and Natural Sciences (FENS) who delivered the speech to the audience emphasizing the importance of this Association. He also stated that the students are crucial for its future development. "Today is the opening ceremony of the association. We plan to become an official association and a member of a large network of associations of the UN in the world. Currently, we are registered as a club at IUS, but we intend to become a non-governmental organization at the state level. We support the UN in Bosnia and Herzegovina, our faculty and we are already working on presenting our goals, ideas and projects" - said Agović.
