IUS Remembers the Srebrenica Genocide Victims

On this day each year, we commemorate and honor all the victims of the Srebrenica Genocide, and we express condolences to and solidarity with the families of the victims. July 11 is also the day when we remember this difficult episode of our history and remember all other atrocities committed during the aggression against the Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Never Forget Srebrenica is a phrase often used when talking about Srebrenica Genocide, suggesting that it is a moral duty of every individual not to forget mass murders. Although remembering mass murders is disturbing, by forgetting them we risk allowing tragedies to happen again, as the perpetrators always try to hide material traces, and revisionist try to deny what happened.

The future of the West Balkans depends on this collective memory. By making memories as authentic as possible, we strive to create a stable and secure environment for the future generations, built on truth, justice, and reconciliation, so that such crimes will never be repeated. Thus, it becomes crucial to revive our knowledge of the authentic facts.

As the International University of Sarajevo, we express our deepest sympathy and condolences to the families of the victims and offer our promise of the lasting remembrance of the Srebrenica Genocide. As an institution of higher education, we take seriously our share of responsibility in the process of reconciliation through education as the tool for the betterment of society.
