IUS Rector Yücel Oğurlu addressed International Conference

Rector of the International University of Sarajevo (IUS), Prof. Dr. Yücel Oğurlu, was one of the distinguished speakers at the International Conference on peace titled "Twenty years of peace - the way forward" on Monday, September 21, 2015. During his speech he pointed out that BiH can accommodate from 50,000 to 100,000 students from foreign countries, which he called a large capacity, but also a potential. Rector Oğurlu believes that BiH is an ideal destination for foreign students who want to continue their studies at BiH universities."The recruitment of foreign students can support Bosnian economy too. We have good initiatives in increasing the number of foreign students in Bosnia and Herzegovina but it is necessary to adopt legal decisions that will make it easier for students to obtain visas and permits for housing in Bosnia and Herzegovina for a longer period of time. Same thing applies for teaching staff. It is essential to improve the procedures for equalization of titles as well. I hope that certain changes in BiH will make the process of attracting more foreign students and their studying a lot easier. ‘’Our proposal is to make this region an educational center but we have to work harder for it.

We believe that we can become the main educational center in the Balkans. Currently at IUS, we have students from 49 and academicians from 20 different countries. IUS currently has 800 students from Turkey, a large number of students from Western Balkan region, EU countries, Russia, China, Iran" - said Rector Oğurlu. Many prominent political figures from Bosnia and abroad addressed this Conference as well. Member of the Presidency of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bakir Izetbegović and former Malaysian Prime Minister Dr. Mahatir Mohamed opened the Conference with their welcoming speeches. Former Croatian and Slovenian presidents Stjepan Mesić and Danilo Turk also addressed the audience with their speeches.

During the Conference, all speakers talked about the successes and shortcomings in the achievement of peace in BiH since the signing of the Dayton Peace Agreement in 1995. The Conference is organized in cooperation with the organization that promotes peace, Perdana Global Peace Foundation (PGPF), BBI (Bosna Bank International) VIP Business Club and Malaysian-Bosnian Business Council (MBBC).
