International University of Sarajevo Celebrates the Victory of Democracy and National Unity of the Republic of Turkey

Today, on July 15, 2017, the Republic of Turkey commemorates the national unity against the 2016 Turkish coup d'état attempt. We mark the first anniversary of the historic day, when the coup plotters tried to take control over the key objectives in Ankara, Istanbul, and some other cities; and when in response to the coup attempt, the Turkish public rushed to the streets, protested and reclaimed their democratic will.

The failed coup attempt killed 250 people and injured nearly 2,200 others. As academics, intellectuals and researchers, we are proud of the courageous Turkish people who took a strong stance against the coup soldiers at the cost of their lives. Their noble sacrifice is not forgotten, they continue to live in the history books of the Republic of Turkey, and the new generations will recognize them as the true heroes of their nation and country.

On this day, July 15, Day of Democracy and National Unity of the Republic of Turkey, we commemorate the Turkish national unity, celebrate the strength of our willpower, and last but not the least – today we honor those who took the greatest sacrifice of all in the suppression of the coup: soldiers, police officers, and civilians who were killed. The International University of Sarajevo expresses deepest condolences to the families of the fallen ones and wishes the fast recovery to all the injured.

The International University of Sarajevo congratulates the July 15, Day of Democracy and National Unity of the Republic of Turkey to all its Turkish students and staff, to all Turkish citizens living in Bosnia and Herzegovina and the Republic of Turkey, and Turkish people all around the world.
