International Mehmet Akif Ersoy Symposium begins at IUS

Gathering many distinguished professors and relevant experts from all over the world, International Mehmet Akif Ersoy Symposium, began on Friday, June 22, 2012, at International University of Sarajevo (IUS).

The Symposium, jointly organized by Foundation of Mehmet Akif Ersoy from Turkey and International University of Sarajevo, is scheduled to last until Monday, June 25, 2012.

The Symposium was opened with introductory speeches from the representatives of Foundation of Mehmet Akif Ersoy, as well as with IUS Rector Prof. Dr. Özer Çınar who used this opportunity to welcome Symposium guests and wish them success in their work. He also gave short summary of IUS history and establishment.

The program continued with keynote speakes Mr. Mehmet Cemal Çiftcigüzeli, dr. Almira Suljević Cikotić, Prof. Dr. Nevzat Yalçıntaş and other guests in the IUS Amphitheatre on the ground floor.

Mehmet Akif Ersoy, the poet of Turkish national anthem -the symbol of independence- is an important philosopher who witnessed the social change and transformation, which he reflected in his works at the end of the 19th century and at the beginning of the 20th century.

Akif, who certificated the Çanakkale triumph which has the characteristic of being foreword for the Turkish Independence War with his unforgettable work named “Çanakkale Şehitlerine”, took part in the War of Independence actively by writing poems, giving speeches, and visiting the fronts.

He acquired a profound place in the Turkish history with the Turkish National Anthem in which he addressed our nation and army in the national struggle against the colonialism and infected the Turkish nation with hope, courage, belief, and national consciousness.
