The ELIT masters students launched their book

This past semester, a Course in creative writing was offered at Masters level in the English Language and Literature (ELIT) department of Faculty of Arts and Social Science (FASS), for the first time at the International University of Sarajevo (IUS). Over the course of the semester, the MA in creative writing group produced a book - Coups, Haircuts and Cockroaches - which they launched in Galerija Mak on 12 June. The book contains six original pieces of writing, including short stories, memoir and a film script, all illustrated by Emir Isović from IUS Life. On the evening of the launch, each student performed an excerpt from their piece, accompanied by the wonderful playing of the pianist and IUS student Beyza Şahin.

The students who produced the book are: Zuhal Guvener, Samiha Naffati, Serap Fišo, Mehtap Ozer Isović, Alper Fener, and Nedžla Ćemanović. The course was taught and book was edited by Assistant Professor Julie Bates, who had this to say about the book launch and creative writing course: "Like the title, Coups, Haircuts and Cockroaches, the sequence of individual works in the book trace an arc from catastrophic events at times of great social upheaval to smaller, more circumspect – but no less dramatic – private moments.

It is no coincidence that the pieces in this book were written in Sarajevo, for no city more resonantly displays its history and prompts the imaginative call and response of storytelling." As well as hosting the launch, the gallery is exhibiting photographs and drawings produced by the group as well as an exhibition on the life and works of the Irish writer Samuel Beckett, contributed by the Irish Embassy in Ljubljana. This exhibition is at Galerija Mak until 29 June and all are welcome to visit it.
