Dr. Ivo Josipović at IUS: The EU is a basis for the peace policies in the Balkans

The former President of the Republic of Croatia and the professor at the Law School of the University of Zagreb Dr. Ivo Josipović gave a lecture at the International University of Sarajevo titled “Peace-maintaining politics: a chance or a utopia for the Balkans”.

Dr. Josipović mentioned some of his examples while he was the President of the Republic of Croatia from 2010 to 2015. He especially emphasized the importance of the European integrations and membership in the European Union in general.

“The EU is the basis for peace politics in the Balkans but aside from the membership, the negotiation process itself was very beneficial for Croatia”, said Josipović.

He pointed out that the European Union is primarily a peace project.

“Even though it was founded as an economic community, the European Union is primarily a peace project today. The history of Europe is a history of war, but today it is almost impossible to imagine a war between the European states”, said. Dr. Josipović.

When asked about some of the controversial comments made by the President of the Republic of Croatia Kolinda Grabar-Kitarović on Bosnia and Herzegovina, Josipović agreed that they were inappropriate.

“Yes, there were some of those inappropriate statements, but Croatia definitely does not have any territorial or political pretensions towards Bosnia and Herzegovina”, Josipović concluded.
