Dr. Edmund Yik Man Chiang Lectured at IUS

Thursday, July 13, 2017, Prof. Dr. Edmund Yik Man Chiang of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, whose specialty is complex analysis in mathematics, gave a seminar at the International University of Sarajevo (IUS).  Dr. Chiang presented his mathematical research, titled: "Difference type Picard theorems and special functions". The lecture was organized by IUS professor Assoc. Prof. Dr. Lejla Miller Van Wierren, Dr. Chiang’s associate.

The lecture content included the review of the classical Picard theorem for complex functions, the discrete version of Picard theorems for meromorphic functions and the new viewpoint on certain classical special functions. Furthermore, the seminar touched upon some formulae of S. Ramanujan, whose work is still being studied and understood by mathematicians.

A recent movie "The Man Who Knew Infinity" sheds light on the life of this fascinating Indian mathematician, who lived at the beginning of the 20th century and with very little formal education made huge discoveries that are still being understood.
