The 21st Balkan Olympiad in Informatics began at IUS

For the first time, this year, Bosnia and Herzegovina is host to the 21st Balkan Olympiad in Informatics ( BOI ) organized at the International University of Sarajevo in the period from September 07th to September 14th, 2013 

The Olympics involve representatives from 13 countries in the region, all Balkan countries, except for Albania, as well as guests from Tajikistan, Slovenia and Croatia and participants can compete in algorithmic problem solving, with default problems solved using the programming language of their choice. All solutions of participants are being tested afterwards.

"This is the greatest concentration of talent and knowledge in computer science for high school students. Students compete for prestige, because the one who wins a medal in this competition, has open doors to world's best universities. The competition is not of qualifying character, and participants have won gold and silver medals at the World Olympiad in Informatics" said Assoc. Prof. Dr. Haris Gavranović, the Chairman of the Organizational Committee of the Balkan Olympiad in Informatics, adding that the assessments are transparent, because they are tested by the computer.

The Rector of the International University of Sarajevo, Prof. Dr. Yücel Oğurlu welcomed the students who will stay at the University in the next few days and compete in the Olympics, saying that young people are the driving force and the potential needed for the world and the society. Rector Oğurlu said that keeping in mind that we live in a world where all of society is quite dependent on information technology, he is glad to see so many bright and smart people gathered at IUS today .

Deputy Mayor of the City of Sarajevo, Dr. Ranko Čović said in his speech that the City of Sarajevo wholeheartedly supports this event, and that this is a great opportunity for the students from B&H, but also for countries in the region to show their talents and preferences and to get together.

In the opening ceremony of the Balkan Olympiad in Informatics, a cultural program was organized during which the Folklore group "KUD Baščaršija" performed and soloists Mirza Selimović and Lamija Kadić.

At the Balkan Olympiad in Informatics the participating teams are made of four students, while the team from Bosnia and Herzegovina, as host of the competition, is represented by eight students.
