13th Golden Helix Pharmacogenomics day completed at IUS

The vision of the International University of Sarajevo (IUS) is to become a major university and research center with a comprehensive excellence in the Balkans. In order to respond to this challenge, the University has organized a symposium in collaboration with the Golden Helix Institute of Biomedical Research in London and Cantonal Medical Chamber of Sarajevo, titled the" 13th Golden Helix Pharmacogenomics Day".

The event was held on Friday, May 30th, 2014 at IUS. It is important to emphasize that this prestigious Symposium related to the field of Pharmacogenomics, has already been organized in other countries all over the world, under the sponsorship of Genomic Medicine Alliance from London and represents the first scientific Symposium of this kind in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Significant number of medical doctors and pharmacists from all over Bosnia and Herzegovina were present at the Symposium. The aim was to provide adequate information on Pharmacogenomics in general.

''Pharmacogenomics is the branch of pharmacology that studies the influence of genetic variation on the effect of drugs on patients through research and the correlation between gene expression, as well as  efficiency or toxicity of the drug. In this way, the Pharmacogenomics deals with the development of rational means in order to optimize the use of drugs, in terms of patients' genotype, and in order to ensure maximum efficacy with minimal undesirable effects'', said the organizer of the project, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Sabina Semiz , without whose support the project would not have been possible to implement. It is important to mention that other professors who have been working on this project were eminent IUS staff Asst. Prof. Dr. Mirza Suljagić and Asst. Prof. Dr. Daria Ler.
