Learning about Cognitive Assessment: MoCA Training at IUS Psychology Program

MoCA Training

On Thursday, April 4, 2024, the IUS Psychology (PSY) study program, in collaboration with IUS Life – Lifelong Learning Center, organized MoCA (Montreal Cognitive Assessment or The MoCA Test) Training. The session was led by Associate Professor Dr. Pınar Ünal-Aydın from the PSY study program, who provided attendees with insight into the crucial aspects of MoCA assessment and its significance.

MoCA has been validated as a highly sensitive tool for the early detection of mild cognitive impairment (MCI) in numerous peer-reviewed studies since 2000. It has gained widespread adoption in clinical settings and is utilized in academic and non-academic research worldwide. With a sensitivity of 90% for detecting MCI, MoCA significantly surpasses the 18% sensitivity of the MMSE (Mini-Mental State Examination). The assessment covers various cognitive domains, including attention and concentration, executive functions, memory, language, visuoconstructional skills, conceptual thinking, calculations, and orientation.

This valuable training was tailored for Clinical Psychology Master and senior Bachelor students, equipping them with the necessary skills to evaluate a patient's cognitive health, including the ability to recognize the presence of mild cognitive impairment.
