The International University of Sarajevo’s (IUS) application to the prestigious SDG Accord initiative has been accepted, and the university has been featured in the 2024 SDG Accord Report. This significant achievement highlights IUS’s commitment to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), marking it as the only university from the Balkans selected for inclusion in this year’s report.
IUS’ case study has been officially published on the website of EAUC – The Alliance for Sustainability Leadership in Education, alongside case studies from other leading universities worldwide. This recognition emphasizes IUS's role in advancing sustainability and integrating the SDGs into its academic and operational framework.
The SDG Accord is a global initiative that unites over 2,800 organizations and individuals committed to promoting the SDGs within higher education. Endorsed by the United Nations Sustainable Development Solutions Network and the United Nations Environment Programme, the Accord aims to inspire and celebrate the role education plays in achieving the SDGs while fostering collaboration among institutions worldwide. Each signatory pledges to annually report their progress, contributing to the global conversation on sustainability and education.
The 7th annual SDG Accord progress report, published by EAUC, is the largest to date, analyzing data from 184 institutions across 40 countries. This year’s report holds particular significance, as it coincides with Global Goals Week and a critical year for assessing global progress on the SDGs. The report showcases real-world examples of how colleges and universities are implementing the SDGs and overcoming challenges.
The IUS case study featured in the report highlights the "Think Globally, Act Locally" IUS SDG Week, held from December 4–8, 2023. Organized by the IUS SDG Executive Committee, this event included practical workshops, lectures by prominent experts, student activities, and exhibitions. It served as a platform for raising awareness and fostering action on the SDGs among students, faculty, and the wider community.
Since its founding in 2003, IUS has integrated social responsibility into its Mission and Vision, positioning itself as a leader in higher education in the Balkans. By aligning with the Agenda 2030 and the SDGs, IUS has implemented various initiatives from 2018–2024 to educate young people and drive positive social change. This commitment has now earned international recognition, showcasing IUS’s impact in shaping a more sustainable future.
